Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College Athletic Department joined forces with women athletes from Winston-Salem State University and Wake Forest University for the National Girls & Women in Sports Day. Athletes from all three schools participated in an autograph/meet and greet session with local youth YMCA athletes prior to the Wake Forest women's basketball game against Syracuse at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum. After the game, Salem and WSSU hosted a clinic on the basketball court for the youth athletes.
Director of Athletics Trish Hughes said, "Salem Athletics was thrilled to be able to collaborate with the Wake Forest and WSSU athletic departments and participate in the NGWSD clinic. The clinic benefitted local girls in the Winston-Salem community and the event showcased the strong leadership of our student athletes in our community and the power of sports in reaching our local youth."
During the clinic, Salem student-athletes led drills including ladder and plyometric workouts, and basketball dribbling drills. The collaboration between the three institutions was unique since it involved programs from all three divisions of the NCAA.
"We look forward to working together with these institutions in the future and fully committed to raising our athletic profile as an NCAA Division III member institution," said Hughes. "The collaboration is further evidence of the fellowship that exists among our peers and ability to pull schools from three difference divisions together for the benefit of the Winston-Salem area."
