Basketball set to kick-off 2014-15 season

November 19, 2014

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College basketball team is set to kick-off their 2014-15 campaign on the road tomorrow night. The Spirits will travel up I-40 East to take on Guilford at 7:00. This will be the first game for Head Coach Britni Mohney as she tries to lead Salem to their second straight Great South Championship in her first season.

All Salem home games and the game at Guilford will be broadcasted on the internet radio. Triad Sports Coverage will be providing the play by play and the links are on the schedule page.

"With our season opener approaching this week, we are really focusing on growth for the 2014-2015 season," said Coach Mohney. "Over the last couple of years, Salem College has created a tradition that we hope to continue, and it begins now."

The Spirits lost five key seniors from last year's squad, but they return seven key members from the championship team. Salem also added first-years MiKayla Sievers and Hannah McBride, and transfer Sabrina Shepherd. All three should see key minutes this season.

"A key expectation in this season will be our patience, we all are learning off of each other and the team is learning an entire new system, but with the determination that the players have and the drive to succeed; we will have forward progress," said Coach Mohney. "What you will see on and off the court this season is the heart, passion, commitment, and a hard teamwork ethic that will carry us to where we strive to be at the end, and that is back in the championship game for the Great South Athletic Conference."

Salem hosts their first home game on December 3rd against Maryville at 5:30. They kick-off Great South play on January 10th when they host conference rival Agnes Scott at 2:00.

Coach Mohney says, "What is so unique about the team this year is that we have an array of talented athletes that have the opportunity to come out and really show their ability, and that will make us a top competitor for the 2014-2015 season."
