ATLANTA, Ga. - The Great South Athletic Conference announced the fall sports Players of the Week for events competed through September 13 and, after voting by the league sports information directors, Salem's Jordan Lanier won the soccer honor, Agnes Scott's Paige Heck took the volleyball prize, and Carmella Cole of Mills took the cross country award.
GSAC Soccer Player of the Week - Jordan Lanier of Salem
Jordan Lanier, a sophomore from Asheboro, NC, has scored four goals and had 2 assists to help Salem to a 4-1 start to the season. Lanier had a goal and an assist in a 4-1 win against Guilford. She scored twice against Warren Wilson in a win and she had a goal and an assist in a win against Hollins.
GSAC Volleyball Player of the Week - Paige Heck of Agnes Scott
Heck has had an outstanding start to the season for Agnes Scott. In a 3-0 win against Talladega, Heck hit .323, had two service aces, and 5 digs. Her aggressive play on the outside has been instrumental to the Scotties success, and she currently leads the GSAC Conference in kills per set (2.71), kills (46) and is second in hitting percentage (.160). Heck was also named to the All-Tournament team at the Huntingdon Jubilee Tournament.
GSAC Cross Country Runner of the Week - Carmella Cole of Mills
Mills freshman Carmella Cole completed her first collegiate race at the Humboldt State Invitational on Saturday, September 12. Cole completed the challenging 6k course in a time of 26:25.0, leading the seven Mills runners. The talented field of runners featured athletes from several D-II and NAIA schools and Cole's time made her the top D-III finisher of the race.
The GSAC sports information directors nominate Player of the Week candidates and then vote on the top two nominees in each sport as selected by the conference office. Player of the Week voting occurs on Tuesdays and the weekly announcement of the winners is released each Wednesday morning.
