Ramos, Nieto Spark Salem Offense in Clash with Knights

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Southern Virginia broke a two-all deadlock at the intermission with a pair of strikes inside the first 20 minutes of the second half to down Salem in USA South Conference soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Varsity Field. 

The Spirits surrendered the first goal of the match when Sonana Akinaka drove a shot by Addie Roe, providing Southern Virginia with the early lead in the 10th-minute. Six minutes later, teammate Matia Murry sent a pass from Courtney Montes to the back of the net, resulting in a 2-0 advantage for the visitors. 

However, Salem answered with a one-on-one goal by Darilyn Nieto, who broke the Knights' defender to net her 16th goal of the season and tie Sawyer Ferguson for the program's all-time lead in goals (46). 

Sophomore Giselle Ramos scored the equalizer in the 35th-minute with a goal to the left side of the box from 35-feet out. 

Abby Klusman's strike in the 59th-minute allowed Southern Virginia to regain the lead by a 3-2 margin. Just over six minutes later, Vanessa Storey sent home a pass from Matia Murray to provide an insurance goal and the final 4-2 margin for the Knights. 

Southern Virginia closed the match with 29 shots, including 13 shots on goal, while Salem attempted eight shots (three SOG). Nieto led the way for the Spirits with four shots, while Ramos added three of her own. Courtney Montes had a team-best four shots for Southern Virginia, finishing with two shots on goal. 

Addie Roe capped off the match with nine shots, while Chloe Miller topped the Southern Virginia lineup with one save.
