Salem Soccer fell 3-1 in their home contest today against conference opponent Mary Baldwin.
Half one was another defensive battle for the Spirits, successfully defending seven corner kicks throughout. The back line alongside Michaela Iapaluccio kept 11 shots from finding the back of the net in the first 30 minutes.
Unfortunately, Iapaluccio took a hard hit while securing the ball and needed to exit the contest in the 34th minute. With Salem having no other healthy goalkeepers on the bench, Hallie Kramer grabbed some gloves and stepped up for the Spirits. Kramer was able to secure a save as well as prevent a few shots before the half was complete.
Wanting to end the half on a high note, the Spirits made one last offensive push in the 43rd minute. A throw in from Sky Sykes set up one last opportunity for the Spirits to capitalize on from her throw in from MBU territory. Sophia Zary received the throw, took a touch, and shot. Even with the MBU goalkeeper getting a glove on it, Zary snuck on by securing the first career goal for the Midfielder.
MBU started half two off with an offensive push, tacking on six shots in the first 10 minutes, two of which were saved by Kramer. Salem was also able to secure a few of their own.
After 21 shots, Mary Baldwin was finally able to find the back of the net in the 64th minute, following a free kick. MBU continued to test the substitute keeper for the next 10 minutes, and their persistence paid off in the 75th minute, scoring again. From a corner kick in the 80th minute, MBU was able to tap one in from the fray.
The Spirits were able to build some more offensive momentum at the end of the second half from Alexia Valente-Arreola, Maddie Sharrai, and Darilyn Nieto, but were unable to find an answer to MBU's last two goals.
The Spirits will next be in action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. where they will travel to Pfeiffer.
