Salem Basketball traveled to Charlotte, NC to play in their second matchup of the season against Johnson & Wales. The Wildcats took home the win with a 68-50 final score.
Despite a layup four seconds into the matchup from Catherine Jordan Cano, the Spirits got out to a slow start in half one, scoring only 12 points to the Wildcats 38. Anayah Noell and Nicole Hester both put points on the board in the first quarter, joined by a three from Amy Pedroza in quarter two. A bright spot in half one was Salem's rebounding, snagging 11 in the first quarter and nine in the second.
The Spirits found a better offensive rhythm in half two, tripling their second quarter score in the third. Pedroza opened up the scoring for Salem, draining a three two minutes into the quarter. She was followed soon after by reigning USA South Rookie of the Week Lauren Ringwood, sinking her first bucket of the evening. Two big fouls kept the Spirits rolling, first an and-one from Hester, then a steal and shooting foul drawn by Tyla Whitehead. Triana Smallwood also got in on the scoring in quarter three, sinking two free throws. Another free throw from Pedroza closed out quarter three, with the Spirits outsourcing the Wildcats 18-13.
A layup from Hester in the paint kept the ball rolling for the Spirits in the fourth quarter, opening the door for an eight point run in the middle of the quarter. Both teams found solid offense in the last two and a half minutes, trading points back and forth. The Spirits closed out the contest with six straight made free throws, coming from Cano, Whitehead, and Cristina Battistini. Despite outscoring the Wildcats 20-17 in the fourth quarter, the deficit was too large to make up, ending the matchup with a 68-50 final in favor of JWU.
The statistical leaders tonight were Amy Pedroza with 13 points, Nicole Hester with eight rebounds, and Tyla Whitehead and Pedroza with four steals.
The Spirits will next be in action on November 25th where they travel to take on Pfeiffer.
