Salem Basketball hosted #2 ranked Brevard in a rescheduled contest, falling 75-46.
The Spirits got out to a strong start, racking up five quick points in the first minute. Catherine Jordan Cano hit an early three, followed soon after by a fastbreak layup by Lauren Ringwood. After a bucket from the Tornados, Cristina Battistini brought the lead back to five with two free throws. A few solid possessions from Brevard tied it up, but an offensive rebound for Jordan Cano resulted in a bucket to keep Salem on top. The Tornados started to find their offense, pulling the lead their way with four minutes left in the quarter. Both Anayah Noell and Nicole Hester put points on the scoreboard before the conclusion of the first frame, keeping the Spirits in shouting distance.
The Tornados kept their foot on the gas in quarter two, out-scoring Salem 25-7. Hester hit a free throw and snagged a bucket in the paint early on, but the team wasn't able to find much more for the rest of the quarter. A bright spot for the Spirits was a strong defensive stretch midway through, grabbing six rebounds, forcing three turnovers, and holding the Tornados to only two points for four minutes. Noell and Ringwood put up two more points each to close out the half.
Quarter three started out on a high note, as the Spirits scored six straight to open the frame. All three buckets were scored in the paint by Hester, Ringwood, and Battistini. Brevard played strong defense for the next three minutes, but their streak was broken by a strong and-one from Ringwood, resulting in a three-point play. Keniya Waring and Noell both found points in the paint soon after, helping the Spirits get back on track offensively.
Quarter four was one of the most competitive of the evening, with Salem out-scoring Brevard 13-12. Ringwood opened the final frame scoring yet another bucket in the paint, Battistini backing her up with two free throws and a jumper of her own. Triana Smallwood also got on the board this quarter, adding to the Spirit's total of 32 points in the paint. Jordan Cano closed out the evening with an and one, capitalizing at the charity stripe. Despite a strong showing in the fourth quarter, Brevard had created too large of a deficit, taking home the 75-46 win.
Tonight's stat leaders are Lauren Ringwood with 11 points, Keniya Waring with two steals, Catherine Jordan Cano with two assists, and Cristina Battistini with eight rebounds.
The Spirits will next be in action on Saturday February 7th at 2pm, where they host Greensboro.
