Salem Tennis competed in two matches this weekend, prevailing over Johnson & Wales 5-2 and falling to Averett 0-7.

Match 1:
The Spirits got off to a hot start at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles, clinching an early point. The two duos of Daisy Ortiz Mendoza / Yuridia Santana-Dominguez and Kimberly Ortiz Mendoza / Adley Keim only dropped a game apiece on their way to two 6-1 wins. Charlize Green and LaKasia Williams put up a strong fight at No. 1 doubles, but fell 3-6.Â

Green bounced back quickly after doubles, taking the win at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-1. Williams did the same, winning at No. 3 6-2, 6-0. Both Ortiz Mendozas kept their momentum rolling from doubles. At No. 4, K. Ortiz Mendoza held firm to snag a 6-1, 6-4 score, while D. Ortiz Mendoza took home a solid 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5.Â

Keim and Macy Hartley battled at No. 1 and No. 6, but fell with identical scores of 3-6, 3-6.Â
Match 2:Â
Nationally ranked Averett started strong in doubles, going 3-0. Green and Williams battled at No. 1, but fell 1-6. Santana-Dominguez and D. Ortiz Mendoza were bested 0-6 at No. 2. The No. 3 duo of Keim and K. Ortiz Mendoza scored the same to close out doubles.Â

Green at No. 2, D. Ortiz Mendoza at No. 5, and Puja Lamsal at No. 6 all fell 0-6, 0-6. K. Ortiz Mendoza snagged a game in set two, but ultimately was beaten 0-6, 1-6 at No. 4. Williams put up a strong fight at No. 3, taking three games off of her opponent in the first set, but was ultimately outlasted 3-6, 1-6.Â
Keim was a bright spot at No. 1, snagging the first set 1-6. Her opponent was able to take set two 6-2, taking their match the distance. After a back-and-forth ten-point tiebreak, Averett edged out Keim 10-8.Â

The Spirits will next be in action on Saturday April 18th, where they travel to take on Meredith.
