Basketball defeats SVU for fourth straight win

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College basketball team won at home against Southern Virginia, 59-51, for their 4th straight win of the season. Satavia Taylor (Chicago, IL) had a game-high 19 points for the Spirits. Salem improves to 4-1 overall, and Southern Virginia drops to 2-2.

The Spirits led for virtually the entire game. Their biggest lead of the 1st half was 28-20, and the two teams went into the break with a 30-28 Salem advantage. The Knights grabbed a 33-30 lead before Salem took control of the game. The Spirits led 41-38 with 12:39 remaining, and then they went on a 18-7 run over the next 10 minutes.

Salem shot 35.5% from the field and SVU shot 38.1%. Southern Virginia had a 37-26 rebound advantage, but the Spirits forced 31 turnovers. Brandi Wilkey (Atlanta, GA) had 6 assists and 4 rebounds for Salem. Jasmine Shabazz (Buffalo, NY) led the Spirits with 6 rebounds, and Shamaz Denerson (Atlanta, GA) added 8 points. Mina Romito led SVU with 17 points.

The Spirits return to the road on Tuesday, when they travel to Fayetteville to take on Methodist University in a non-conference game.
