GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Salem volleyball team earned its program-record seventh straight win as it conducted its fifth-ever sweep of Greensboro and fourth-ever season sweep of The Pride on Thursday evening with a 25-22, 25-15, 25-16 win at Hanes Gymnasium in a USA South Conference clash.
The Spirits, who ran their winning streak to seven straight, were led offensively by the trio of
Aspen Bradley (14 kills),
Anna Rymer (10) and
Ellie Scherer (nine). First year setter
Leah Rymer, who closed with a match-high 33 assists, led the Spirits' offense to a .287 attack percentage. Individually,
Anna Rymer posted a .429 attack percentage, a mark equaled by Bradley.
The Salem defense, which limited Greensboro to a .190 hitting percentage and 36 kills, was led by the combination of
McKenzie Tullock (21 digs) on the back row while
Anna Rymer and Scherer came through with two of solo blocks each on the front row. Rymer also contributed 11 digs, capping off her double-double performance for the Spirits.
FIRST SET: The two teams were evenly matched throughout the course of the opening frame as Greensboro jumped out to an 8-4 lead on a slam from Krista Brantley.
Anna Rymer drove home a kill and The Pride committed a series of errors, while Bradley came through with a kill of her own to even the game at nine points apiece. Salem eventually moved in front by three, 12-9, but The Pride evened the match with a 6-3 run at 15-all. Five ties in the next 12 points brought the game to 21-all deadlock. Bradley broke the tie with a service ace and
Maia Johnson added two kills down the stretch to clinch the three-point win.
SECOND SET: Salem's offensive stayed in rhythm in the second set, posting 17 kills and a .275 attack percentage, while the defense held The Pride to just seven kills and a .077 attack percentage. Five kills apiece from
Anna Rymer and Scherer proved to be the difference. Sophomore
Makailey Albright was the sparkplug to the Salem offense early in the set, delivering back-to-back kills which resulted in a 9-3 advantage. Greensboro retaliated, trimming the lead to three on two occasions, but it was timely slams by Bradley that helped the Spirits move in front 15-10.
Abrielle Eckenroth and Scherer drove kills past the Greensboro defense, while
Maia Johnson slammed home the 21st point to give Salem a 10-point advantage. A late rally by Greensboro cut the deficit to six, but it was kills down the stretch by
Anna Rymer and Scherer that resulted in the 10-point win.
THIRD SET: Bradley was the decisive factor in the third frame for the Spirits, delivering eight kills on 15 attacks, as Salem came through with 17 kills as a unit. Meanwhile, Greensboro's offensive attack continued its struggles with a .158 attack percentage and just 10 kills. Salem again jumped out to an early lead, capitalizing three kills between the tandem of Bradley and Eckenroth, resulting in a 7-2 score. Cotie Taylor drove home a Greensboro kill, slicing the margin to 10-6, but four Salem kills in a six-point span stretched the margin to 15-7. Bradley added three kills down the stretch, helping the Spirits establish a 21-11 lead.
Leah Rymer added a kill down the stretch and Greensboro committed a miscue for the decisive point as the Spirits clinched the second win over The Pride this season.
