RALEIGH, N.C. — The duo of Pamela Mock and Rylie Wade combined for 28 points and 28 rebounds as they helped lead Meredith to a season sweep of Salem in women's hoops action with a 62-45 win at the Weatherspoon Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile, Salem received 16 points from
Amy Pedroza and 11 from graduate senior
Cree Bass.
Mock, who finished 9-of-12 from the floor, closed with 18 points and added 10 rebounds, including six defensive rebounds, to lead both teams in scoring. Wade climbed glass for 18 rebounds (11 defensive rebounds), while hitting 3-of-13 from the field and 4-of-6 from the free throw line. Meredith was a combined 26-of-70 (37.1%) from the floor and knocked down 8-of-14 at the free throw line.
Pedroza led the way for the Spirits' offense with 16 points, finishing with six field goals and two 3-pointers. Bass knocked down 4-of-10 from the field, including a trio of 3-pointers, to top the double-digit mark.
Jade Ware led Salem on the glass with seven rebounds, while both
Lily Gorum and
Nicole Hester pulled down five apiece.
FIRST QUARTER: Meredith held a 17-10 lead at the close of the quarter, hitting 8-of-23 from the floor, while the Spirits managed just four field goals. Pedroza opened scoring for the Spirits with a 3-pointer, and Salem assumed a 5-4 lead just over a minute later on a layup from Ware. Hester tipped in a free throw and Bass drained a 3-pointer, tying the score at 10-all, before a 7-0 run by Meredith closed out the half.
SECOND QUARTER: The Avenging Angels continued their hot shooting in the opening half, scoring five of their 14 points at the free throw line, assuming a 31-16 lead at the intermission. Meredith opened the frame on a 4-0 run, moving the lead to double figures (21-10), before Pedroza put Salem on the board with a jumper. Pedroza added a jumper, while
Anayah Noell drained two free throws, to make for the 15-point difference.
THIRD QUARTER: Salem enjoyed its best offensive quarter in the third, outscoring the Avenging Angels 16-14 in the third, after finishing 6-of-16 (40%) from the floor and 2-of-3 (66.7%) from beyond the arc and the free throw line. A layup by Mock stretched the Meredith lead to 24 by the 5:50 mark of the third. Pedroza and
Cristina Battistini, who drained a 3-pointer, quickly cut that margin to 14, 43-29, with 2:37 remaining in the third. Bass closed out the quarter with a layup as time expired to trim the deficit to 45-32.
FOURTH QUARTER: Meredith equaled its first quarter points production, 17, after finishing 8-of-18 (44.4%) from the floor. The Avenging Angels amped up their defensive effort in the opening minutes of the final quarter, putting together a 10-2 run, which resulted in a 55-34 contest. Bass was responsible for two treys in the final 5:23 of the game to make for the 62-45 final.
