In pursuit of a spot in USA South Postseason play, Salem Soccer took home a key win on the road today, beating Meredith 2-1.
Meredith started half one out with a strong offensive push, securing three corner kick opportunities and one shot, all of which were defended well by Salem's back line. Darilyn Nieto was able to find two shot opportunities early on, but Meredith continued to put up shots. They were ultimately able to find the back of the net in the 30th minute. The Spirits, however, had a quick answer, with Giselle Ramos setting up Nieto to score just seven minutes later. Both teams defended well for the rest of half one, ending without any more great offensive chances.
Meredith started out half two with a strong offensive push, putting up five shots to Salem's one in the first 13 minutes. The Spirits back line continued to play a solid game, which was made even better by Sky Sykes. The defender sent her second assist of the season up to none other than Nieto for what ended up being the game winning goal for Salem. Despite Meredith's best efforts at another goal, Michaela Iapaluccio protected well, posting a second half shutout with eight saves.
This win brings Salem up to 2-4-2 in the USA South, just a few points away from a playoff bid.
The Spirits have their last regular season contest on Wednesday where they host Greensboro and look to make a final push for the postseason.
