WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Southern Virginia, the No. 6 team in the regional polls, used a trio of double-digit scoring performances to earn an 81-48 victory over Salem in USA South Conference action on Tuesday evening at Varsity Gym. Addison Newman lead the way with a game-high 17 points, while Abigail Snyder (13) and Aysia Foster (11) also reached double digit points for the Knights.

The Spirits countered with the trio of Nicole Hester, Amy Pedroza and Cree Bass, who combined for 34 of the team's 45 points. Hester's 12-point performance was tops for the Spirits, highlighted by a 6-for-6 outing from the free throw line. Bass knocked down five field goals for Salem, including one from beyond the arc, while Predroza converted two field goals to go along with six free throws.

Hester missed her seventh double-double of the slate by two rebounds, closing with eight, which was a game high. Salem closed the game by knocking down 14-of-16 free throws, converting 87.6 percent on the game.

FIRST QUARTER: Four points apiece from the combination of Hester and Ware helped keep Salem in pace with the Knights as they trailed by just three, 15-12, at the close of the quarter. The Spirits were a perfect 4-of-4 from the line in the frame. After falling behind 4-0 early in the game, Salem used a series of buckets from Hester and Ware to even the game at four apiece. After a Hester bucket provided Salem with the 6-4 advantage, Southern Virginia scored six straight to move back in front. The Spirits responded with a 6-0 run, capped off free throws from Pedroza, moving back in front 12-10. A five-point run to close the quarter by the Knights, including a fast break from Addison Newman, resulted in a 15-12 edge.

SECOND QUARTER: Southern Virginia used a 60 percent shooting performance, hitting 12-of-20 from the field, to separate itself from Salem. Newman keyed the offensive attack with 11 points, finishing with four field goals. The Knights stretched their lead early in the second to eight, 20-12, before a pair of free throws by Hester sliced the margin to six. The offense remained in rhythm for the Knights, who assumed a 12-point lead following a jumper from Newman. Southern Virginia's margin reached 20, 38-18, following a 3-pointer off the hand of Abigail Snyder with four minutes remaining. Both teams scored seven points apiece down the stretch, with four coming from Bass, as the score stood at 45-25 at the intermission.

THIRD QUARTER: Southern Virginia wrapped up the third quarter with 19 points, hitting 5-of-13 from the floor, while the Spirits countered with 13, which came due in large part to five field goals. The Knights doubled up Salem, 50-25, with a 3-pointer from Maria Savvun in the first minute of the quarter. However, Pedroza answered with a 3-pointer of her own to provide the 32nd Salem point of the game. The combination of Bass, Hester and Cristina Battistini accounted for the final six points of the frame, as Southern Virginia grabbed a 64-38 lead through three.

FOURTH QUARTER: Salem managed 10 points in the fourth frame, capitalizing on five free throws in the process. Foster bumped the Knights' lead past 30 points, with a layup at the 9:12 mark. Salem capitalized on scores from Lily Gorum, Pedroza and Ware in succession, resulting in a 75-44 contest. Jumpers late from Maleah Flagler and Bass resulted in the final points of the game for the Spirits in the 81-48 setback.
