Soccer Dominates in Lightning-Delayed Home Opener

In their Home opener today, Salem Soccer put up a whopping seven goals in their shutout against Wesleyan College.

In what started out as a sweltering afternoon, the Spirits opened up the scoring quickly, with Pilar Neumann finding the back of the net in the fourth minute. Darilyn Nieto built upon this total soon after, scoring four goals within 17 minutes. The first was assisted by Sophia Zary and the second by Brie Wilson. Alexia Valente-Arreola wanted to get in on the scoring, and shot a banger from the top of the box to secure a goal of her own in the final minute of the half.

On top of the strong scoring efforts, Salem's defense put up a dominant performance themselves, only allowing two shots from Wesleyan the whole first half. Michaela Iapaluccio was ready for the one shot on goal she received, snagging her one save of the contest.

As halftime wound down, a lightning delay was called, forcing the teams to take an extended break before the second half.

In spite of the delay, the Spirits entered half two ready to continue their strong performance. Darilyn Nieto was back to where she left off, netting her fifth and final goal of the day in the 60th minute. Defense continued to hold strong, keeping their opponents to their own half and not allowing any more shots.

Just as the contest crossed the 70 minute mark, lightning was back in the unsafe distance threshold, ending the game early.

The Spirits will next be in action tomorrow, where they take on Agnes Scott College at home.
