Salem Soccer's home contest today against Agnes Scott ended with a 2-2 tie.
While the weather was chilly, both the Spirits and Scotties brought the heat to today's match up. A physical game from start to finish, full of breakaway scoring opportunities and strong defense.
Agnes Scott opened up the scoring quickly, finding the back of the net after a breakaway in the 3rd minute. For the next 40 minutes, it was a defensive showdown. While the Spirits were able to rack up 13 shots in the first half, there were few grade A chances to capitalize on. While the offense was pushing hard downfield, the defense held the Scotties to only three shots the entire half. An unfortunate slip from Salem led to an own goal in the 43rd minute, closing out the scoring for the half.
Half two came with a much higher offensive presence from Salem, keeping the ball on their attacking half and using their back line to switch the field throughout. Their hard work paid off in the 69th minute, with Maddie Sharrai scoring off of Alexia Valente-Arreola's initial shot attempt. The Spirits took this momentum and ran with it as Sophia Zary sent a beautiful ball downfield where Darilyn Nieto was able to capitalize and score in the 72nd minute.
The Spirits will next be in action on Friday September 12th, where they travel to Virginia to take on Hollins University.
