Softball Defeated in Elimination Game and Season Comes to an End

Salem Softball competed in their second game of the USA South Conference Tournament against Southern Virginia University on Friday morning, losing by the score of 9-1.

Game:

Salem was unable to get on the board early in the top of the first, despite a two out single from Reese Upton to shallow right field. Southern Virginia was also scoreless in the first, going-three-up-three-down following a lead off walk with outs being recorded by Madison Talley on the mound, Maleah Tate in center field, and Morgan Lawson at third. Emma Greeson was a bright spot for the Spirits offensively in the top of the second with a lead off single to right field. Talley then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Greeson into scoring position and Camryn Clarke singled up the middle to shallow center field. NeVaeha George remained patient at the plate to earn the walk and load the bases but all runners were left stranded from there. In the bottom of the second, Southern Virginia got on the board with one run on two hits and one left on base. Defensive putouts were recorded by Upton behind the plate, Carlee Tart at short, and Tate to end the inning. Salem remained scoreless in the top of the third despite singles from Tate, Lawson, and Greeson to reach base. Southern Virginia added to their lead, scoring four runs on six hits in the bottom of the third. Significant outs were recorded by Lawson, Tate, and Kayla Dick in right field to end the rally. Clarke was a spark for the Spirits in the top of the fourth with a one out single to the left side. She was then brought home to score on George's single to center field. Southern Virginia took control of the game in the bottom of the fourth scoring four runs on four hits. Critical defensive plays were made by Lawson, Chloe Bailey-Bonomo in the circle, and Tate to end the long inning.

Despite their efforts and a single from Greeson in the top of the fifth, the Spirits were unable to respond with the contest ending in five innings and the season coming to an end.
