Soccer opens season with 4-1 win at home

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College soccer team started the season with a 4-1 non-conference win against North Carolina Wesleyan. Sawyer Ferguson (Billings, MT) scored a hat-trick to secure the win. Salem improves to 1-0 on the season, and NC Wesleyan drops to 0-1.

Ferguson scored her first goal in the 17th minute on an assist by Tarryn Bundy (West Deptford, NJ). Bundy would score her first collegiate goal in the 35th minute off of a pass by MacKenzie Schmidt (Columbus, OH). Schmidt assisted Ferguson in the 44th minute. The Spirits went into half with a 3-0 advantage.

Wesleyan scored in the 59th minute, before Ferguson put the game out of reach in the 81st minute off a pass by Madison Gurule (Montrose, CO). Salem held a 23-3 shot advantage and a 7-2 corner kick advantage.

The Spirits return to action tomorrow, when they host Emory & Henry at 2:00.
