Nieto Notches Three Goals in 6-1 Triumph Over Wesleyan

MACON, Ga. – Salem junior Darilyn Nieto delivered three first half goals, while teammate Nathaly Berrezueta netted two and Alexia Valente-Arreola added one , to help the Spirits complete a 6-1 victory over Wesleyan (Ga.) on Sunday afternoon in Macon. 

It marks the sixth time in Nieto's three-year career that she has scored at least three goals for Salem, which is a program record. Nieto's best single-match performance came when she drove home five goals in a victory over Hollins on September 1, 2023. 

Nieto scored her first goal of the day in the ninth-minute of play and Berrezueta followed that with a strike in the 23rd-minute of play when extended the Salem lead to 2-0. The speedy Nieto drove home a pass from Berrezueta in the 29th-minute, stretching the Salem lead to 3-0. 

Nieto's final goal of the match capped off first half scoring in the 40th minute as Salem headed into the intermission with a 4-0 advantage. 

Becky Leigh Wilson answered with a goal for the Wolves in the 59th-minute, but Berrezueta's strike just over a minute later again made for a four-goal Salem advantage. Berrezueta's goal came on a pass from Sky Sykes

Valente-Arreola punched home the final goal of the match, her second on the season, in the 65th-minute. 

Salem closed the game with 31 shots, including 20 shots on goal. Nieto led all individuals with 11 shots, including eight in the direction of the goal. Giselle Ramos attempted nine shots (six SOG) over the course of the match. 

The Salem defense once again held the opposition in check, allowing seven shots (four SOG) over the course of the contest. Wilson was the lone Wesleyan player with multiple shots (five) on the match. 

Addie Roe earned the starting nod in net and came through with three saves over 90 minutes for her first collegiate victory between the pipes.
