It's another busy week in Salem Athletics! Here is a bit about each contest happening:
Â
Volleyball opens the week when they travel to Southern Virginia University for a 6pm matchup on Wednesday. The Knights and Spirits have faced off once so far this season, with Salem taking home the win in four sets. It was a highly competitive contest, with multiple high scoring sets, with the fourth finishing at a 26-24 result. Aspen Bradley put up her second highest kill total of the season with 16, Leah Rymer led in assists with 39, and Madison Bozarth led in both digs and aces with 25 and three respectively. The Knights are currently one spot behind the Spirits in the USA South Conference standings, making this an important contest for post-season seeding.Â
Â
Two Salem teams will compete on Saturday, starting first with Volleyball at Methodist at 1pm. The two squads played on October 2nd, ending in a 3-1 result in favor of the Spirits. This matchup was also highly competitive, the game ending with nearly equal team statistics in points, kills, aces, blocks, assists, and digs. Both Ella Brameus and Bradley racked up 16 of Salem's 58 kills in this matchup, with Rymer and Bozarth once again leading in assists and digs. Methodist is currently ranked 6th in the USA South.Â
Â
Soccer will be playing the second Saturday game where they will be taking on Meredith at 2pm. The Spirits are 3-7-5 against the Angels, losing last season's contest 1-4. Salem's back line held the Angels off for nearly the entire first half, not letting up a goal until the 44th minute. Their lone goal came from the foot of Darilyn Nieto, assisted by Giselle Ramos. Meredith is currently 5th in the USA South standings with a record of 3-3-1. The Spirits are looking to take home a win to pull themselves closer to a spot in the post-season.Â
Â
Softball will also be playing their non-traditional season scrimmages this Sunday at 1pm and 4pm, where they will be hosting Catawba Valley Community College and Caldwell Community College. These games will be played as two five-inning double headers. A taco food truck will also be parked throughout the afternoon.Â
