Salem Track & Field competed in their first meet at Montreat College, with athletes making their collegiate T&F debut.
Four athletes competed in the 100m, with all four running sub-15. Ashlynn Owens led the way with a speedy 13.68, with Lauren Ringwood not far behind at 13.91. Anavi Smith put up a 14.16, followed by Triana Smallwood at 14.78.
Owens, Smith, and Smallwood also ran the 200m, all running sub-30. Owens crossed the finish line first for the Spirits, running a 28.98. Smith and Smallwood finished within .1 of each other at 29.81 and 29.91 respectively.
Two Salem runners also competed in the 800m. Allyson Freeman and Sophie Miller, both Cross Country athletes, crossed the finish line less than two seconds apart. Freeman ran a 2:28.92 and Miller ran a 2:50.59.
Salem throwers also had a strong showing, with Sonia Cherry, Skylyr Yearby, Quay Atkinson, and Payton Dolin starting their seasons out on a high note. The throwers all competed in both shotput and discus. Cherry led the way with 7.66 in shot and 22.60 in disc. Yearby was next, throwing a 7.48 in shot and 20.53 in disc. A 6.85 shot and 18.72 disc put Atkinson just behind. Dolin closed out the day for the Spirits, throwing a 5.20 in shot and a 15.28 in disc.
The Spirits will next be in action on March 28th at the Blue Bear Invitational.
