Salem Softball competed in their first game of the USA South Conference Tournament against Pfeiffer University on Thursday morning, falling by the score of 9-0.
Game:
Salem was unable to strike first in their first conference tournament appearance since 2019, going three-up-three-down in the top of the first. Pfeiffer, however, was, scoring one run on two hits in the bottom of the first while also stranding two runners. Maleah Tate was a bright spot for the Spirits securing all three outs in center field to end the inning. Salem remained scoreless in the top of the second, however Madison Talley was able to leg it out and find her way on with a ball hit to the pitcher. Defensively, the Spirits were able to hold the Falcons scoreless in the bottom of the second with outs being recorded by Tate, Camryn Clarke at second base, and Emma Greeson in left field. Salem remained cold at the plate in the third, going three-up-three-down. Pfeiffer added to their lead, scoring two runs on one hit in the bottom of the third. Key defensive plays were made by Tate and Morgan Lawson at third to end the inning. Salem's rough day at the plate continued in the top of the fourth with another quick inning offensively. The Falcons took control in the bottom of the fourth scoring six runs on seven hits leaving two runners on base. Crucial defensive plays were made by Tate and Lawson to end the rally.
Despite their efforts, the Spirits were unable to cut into the deficit with the contest ending in five innings in favor of the home team.
