WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Three members of the Salem soccer team—
Nathaly Berrezueta,
Marissa Doutrich and
Sky Sykes–earned a spot on the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District unit when the organization announced its selections.
The 2024-25 Academic All-District® Women's Soccer teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes women's soccer honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
Salem was one of five teams representing the USA South Conference to place student-athletes on the list, along with Brevard (five), Methodist (six), Southern Virginia (five) and William Peace (three).
Berrezueta is originally from Cuenca, Ecuador, and is a first-generation college graduate in her family. Berrezueta, who will graduate in three years from Salem, is a double major in mathematics and chemistry and minoring in data science.
Along with being a two-year captain of the Salem soccer program, Berrezueta is also part of the Salem College Honors Program and was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Women's Soccer Team last season and the 2023-24 USA South Academic All-Conference team.
Her career closed with her appearing in 46 matches, making 32 starts along the way, where she tallied six goals, five assists and 17 points.
A sophomore goalkeeper from York, Pa., Doutrich is responsible for a 3.73 GPA in exercise science at Salem. Along with being a leader in net for the Spirits, Doutrich is active on the Salem campus as a resident's assistant and is active in both the Rotaract Club and Morgan's Message. She tallied five double-digit save performances during the course of the season, including a 1-save outing versus Columbia (S.C.) in the season opener on September 2nd.
Doutrich notched 11 saves in a clash with eventual USA South Conference champion Methodist (Sept. 29). In a solid performance versus Brevard, Doutrich added her third double-digit save outing, closing with 10 on October 16. After a single-match season-high 12 saves at William Peace, Doutrich ended her season with 10 saves against Greensboro on October 30th.
In two seasons at Salem, Doutrich has combined for 181 saves over the course of her career. Made 103 saves in 2023, which ranks as the second-most in program history and 78 in 2024, which marked the seventh-most. Doutrich's 181 career saves are fourth-most in Salem soccer history.
Sykes, who hails from Atlanta, is a biology major at Salem with a 4.0 GPA. She appeared in 13 games, making 12 starts along the way. Along with being a student-athlete, Sykes also serves as President of the Rotaract Club along with being the Chairman of the Black Student Union.
Sykes delivered one assist on the season, which came in her home state of Georgia, against Wesleyan on September 8th. Sykes led the way for a defensive unit that held opposing teams to a .125 shot percentage over the course of the 2024 campaign.
Sykes has competed in 29 matches, making 28 starts along the way, for Salem in two seasons. She has logged 2,469 minutes. This marks the second award in Sykes' Salem career, along with being named to the USA South All-Sportsmanship Team in 2023. Additionally, she has earned a spot on the 2023 Fall President's List, 2024 Spring President's List and was a 2023-24 USA South Academic All-Conference honoree.
