DANVILLE, Va. – Salem made its first non-conference road trip of the season and suffered a pair of setbacks to Averett by scores of 10-1 (5 innings / Game 1) and 7-4 (Game 2) at Cougar Field in Danville, Va.
Kayla Dick was among the offensive leaders for the Spirits, coming away with one hit in each game, including a triple in game two. First year classmate
Reese Upton was also integral with a double and a run scored. The same was true of
Mackenzie Kramer, who finished 1-for-3 from the plate with a double in game two of the doubleheader.
Salem combined for 10 hits between the two games, including seven in the second game. Along with extra-base hits from Dick, Upton and Kramer, the Spirits got singles from the combination of
Maleah Tate,
Carmen Duffey and
Olivia Porter.
Isabella Morales tossed six innings in game two, allowing seven runs on 12 hits, while fanning one Averett hitter.
Riley Dennis earned the starting nod in game one, pitching four innings, allowing 12 runs on 10 hits and closing with three K's.
The Cougars improved their record to 16-4-1 in the all-time series between the two programs.

Reese Upton scored the first run of the game, reaching on a fielding error that put her at second before scoring on a wild pitch from third.

AVERETT HIGHLIGHTS
-Hannah Zabik doubled to right centerfield, plating Carson Bradsher for the first Cougars' run of the game and scored two batters later on a single from Kadence Woodlief to give Averett a 2-1 lead through one.
-Averett moved its lead to 6-1 in the home half of the second. Three runs scored on a triple to left from Zabik. Mackenzie Newcomb grounded to third for the out, but brought home Zabik for the 6-1 Cougar lead.
-Averett enjoyed its second four-run inning of the game in the fourth. The first two came on a single from Newcomb, which led to two throwing errors and two Cougars scoring as a result.
-Woodlief brought home Newcomb with a single of her own. Teammate Angela Rodriguez plated Woodlief on a single to centerfield, resulting in the 10-1 lead.

SALEM HIGHLIGHTS
-Salem again put the first run on the board in the first inning.
Kayla Dick stole second and
Maleah Tate stole third before advancing home on a throwing error, giving the Spirits a 1-0 advantage.
-The Spirits rebounded from a four-run second by Averett to score three runs on five hits in the third. Dick got the Spirits offense started with a triple to left, scoring on a double by Upton.
-
NeVaeha George followed with a single to centerfield, moving Upton to third, before
Carmen Duffey singled to right field to score Upton from third.
-The third and final run of the third for the Spirits came when
Mackenzie Kramer drove a double to left centerfield, scoring
Jelene Avila, who pinch ran for George, from third.
AVERETT HIGHLIGHTS
-Averett assumed a 2-1 lead in the home half of the first when Mackenzie Newcomb drove a single through the left side of the infield to score Carson Bradsher from second base.
-Kadence Woodlief reached on a muffed throw at first, scoring Hannah Zabik for the 2-1 Averett lead.
-The Cougars scored four runs on five hits in the second, upping their lead to 6-1. The first of those came from Zabik, who lined a single up the middle to score Bradsher. Newcomb quickly followed with a triple down the left field line, plating Zabik, stretching the margin to 4-1.
-A triple by Woodlief, coupled with a single to shortstop by Angela Rodriguez, resulted in runs from Newcomb and Woodlief, moving the score to 6-1.
-The Cougars tacked on an insurance run in the fourth inning when Zabik singled to left, scoring Bradsher for the final run of the game.
