Salem Tennis hosted Columbia (SC) this weekend in a spring-break-tilt, ultimately falling 1-6.
The Koalas got off to a strong start in doubles, securing the point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Adley Keim and Kimberly Ortiz Mendoza battled at No. 2, falling 0-6, while Yuridia Santana-Dominguez and Macy Hartley secured one game in their 1-6 result at No. 3.
A bright spot for the Spirits in doubles was the No. 1 duo of Charlize Green and LaKasia Williams. The pair played a tight match, going the distance to a seven-point set tiebreaker. Green and Williams dominated the breaker, taking home the win 7-6 (7-3).
Columbia secured wins at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 5 to quickly clinch the match. Williams fell first at No. 3, playing a solid match with a 3-6, 2-6 final score. The Koala's No. 4 player took care of business, defeating Santana-Dominguez 6-1, 0-6. Green at the No. 2 spot bounced back after a 0-6 first set to play a close second, but ultimately fell 4-6.
Both Ortiz-Mendozas took their matches the distance at No. 4 and No. 6. Daisy took the first set 6-3 at No. 6, but the Koala athlete took the reins in set two, securing a 6-2 win. Despite the strong fight, Daisy ultimately fell 2-10 in the third set tiebreak. Kimberly turned the tables on her opponent at No. 4, winning set two in a 7-4 tiebreaker after falling 1-6 in set one. Battling through the end, Kimberly fell in a close 7-10 third set.
Keim secured Salem's sole singles win, taking care of business at No. 1 with a 6-2, 6-2 final score.
The Spirits will next be in action on March 14th where they host Hollins.
