Salem Tennis made the trek up to Southern Virginia University, playing a competitive match but ultimately fell 2-5.
SVU hit the ground running in doubles, defeating Charlize Green / LaKasia Williams at No. 1 and Daisy Ortiz Mendoza / Yuridia Santana-Dominguez at No. 2 6-0 and 6-2 respectively. An early bright spot for the Spirits was the No. 3 doubles team of Adley Keim and Kimberly Ortiz Mendoza, taking down the Knights 6-2. Despite the strong effort at No. 3, SVU secured the doubles point.
The Knights kept a foot on the gas into singles taking the win at both No. 2 and No. 6.Green played a strong first set, but ultimately fell 5-7, 1-6 at No. 2 and Puja Lamsal fell at No. 6 1-6, 1-6.
Williams bounced back after a tough loss in doubles, securing a solid 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3. Keim kept her momentum rolling, taking the win at No. 1 singles 6-4, 7-5 to go 2-0 on the day.
Both Ortiz Mendozas took their matches the distance and played in third set tiebreakers. K. Ortiz Mendoza got off to a slow start, dropping set one 0-6. Finding her stride in set two, K. Ortiz Mendoza won 6-4. Since the match was not yet decided, a full third set was played. SVU was able to regain momentum in the tiebreaker, ultimately giving them the 6-2 win and clinching the match.
D. Ortiz Mendoza won her first set at No. 5 6-3, then played a tight second that ended at 5-7. Despite the competitive set, the Knights took the tiebreak 10-3.
The Spirits will next be in action on Saturday April 4th where they take on Pfeiffer.
