The 2013 Salem Soccer unit became the first in team history to reach the NCAA Tournament, which resulted in a clash with Hanover on November 16th.Â
The Spirits opened the season with a 3-0-2 mark under the direction of head coach Jay Callahan, claiming wins over N.C. Wesleyan, Guilford and Greensboro along with ties against Meredith and Methodist, both going to double overtime.Â
Despite a series of one-goal setbacks to Barton (September 18) and Bridgewater (September 24), Salem added wins against West Virginia Tech (3-0) and Wesleyan (Ga.) (7-0), improving its mark to 5-3-2 at the close of September.Â
Callahan and his unit amped up their defense, allowing just two goals throughout the course of October, while scoring 43 goals on offense, winning eight straight matches. The Spirits tallied at least four goals in all but one match during the streak as they rolled through Great South Athletic Conference play.Â
Among the decisive wins during the eight-match winning streak were a pair of seven-goal outings against USC Lancaster (October 13) and Judson (October 18). Salem notched 10 goals, a season-high, in a win at Trinity (D.C.) on October 5th. October came to a close with a 1-0 win over rival Agnes Scott on October 26th. Â
The success from October continued in early November as Salem posted a 5-0 win over Mills and a 2-0 victory against Agnes Scott to claim the Great South Athletic Conference crown and earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament.Â
The Spirits faced Hanover in their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, suffering a 2-1 setback.Â
