Hall of Fame
Lorie Howard served as the Director of Athletics at Salem Academy for 30 years between 1990 and 2020.Â
After serving as the Director of Physical Education at Westchester Country Day School for five years, between 1985 and 1990, Howard accepted the position as Director of Athletics at Salem Academy. Along with that role, she coached the varsity tennis and basketball programs, while serving as the junior varsity soccer coach.Â
As a coach, Howard captured Basketball Coach of the Year on three occasions (1987, 1988, 1990) and was named Tennis Coach of the Year in 1989.Â
With Howard at the helm, Salem Academy hosted multiple North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association tournaments for tennis, volleyball, softball and field hockey. Additionally, she developed the Preseason Sports Camp at Salem Academy for all incoming fall student-athletes, which spanned from 2008-2020.Â
Howard also used her passion for tennis as a vessel to extend the Salem Academy & College footprint by serving as an instructor for the Salem College Community Continuing Education program.Â
Howard’s impact on Salem Academy & College stretched beyond the athletic fields as she was the off-campus January Term Internship Committee advisor for students. An athletic liaison between Salem Academy and Salem College, Howard also taught physical education for freshman and sophomore students.Â
Howard was a familiar face on the Salem campus as a member of Council on Academic Affairs, Admissions Committee and as an advisor for the Salem Academy Mock Trial Team.Â
As a result of her dedication to Salem Academy & College, she was the recipient of the Joel Weston Faculty Award for Excellence at Salem in 2010.
Since leaving Salem Academy & College, Howard worked with the Forsyth Tennis Academy (2020-22), where she taught in the Junior Novice programs and developed the Forsyth All-Sports Camp at Tanglewood Country Club. She has also served as a permanent substitute teacher for K-12 at Wesleyan Christian Academy.Â
Howard earned her bachelor's degree in health and physical education, along with a minor in English, at Bob Jones (’84) before earning a master’s degree in liberal studies at Wake Forest (’00).Â
