Jay Callahan capped off his 10-year coaching stint at Salem College with a 140-43-8 mark, resulting in a .773 career winning percentage in that stretch. That gives him the most wins and best-winning percentage in program history.Â
Â
Callahan, who had just one season with a below .500 mark (7-8, 2008), won at least 11 matches in nine straight seasons. Callahan defended the home turf of Varsity Field to the tune of a 69-13-3 record and had a highly successful Great South Athletic Conference mark of 56-10-12 record, which resulted in a .824 winning percentage. During three years (2013-15), Callahan led the team to a perfect league-action record.Â
Â
Callahan also guided the Spirits to their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament, which came in 2013, resulting in a 15-4-2 season. The following season, Salem made a return trip to the NCAA Tournament, where it finished 18-5-0. This marked the first of two 18-win seasons for Salem under Callahan’s direction, with the second coming in 2016 when the Spirits were 18-2-1.Â
Â
Callahan was recognized as AD3I Coach of the Year in 2009 and was four-time Coach of the Year for the Great South Athletic Conference (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015). He is also the only Spirits coach named USA South Coach of the Year, which came in 2017. With Callahan at the helm of the soccer program, the Spirits were perfect in Great South Athletic Conference action from 2013 to 2015. Â
Â
Callahan’s 2014 unit set the benchmark for most goals (95), most assists (57), points (247), shots (515), and shots on goal (304) in a single season in program history. After opening the 2014 season with a 4-1 mark, Salem rebounded from a 2-0 setback to Barton by rattling off seven straight victories. The Spirits would suffer a 3-0 loss to Lynchburg before winning seven of their next eight matches, including the Great South Athletic Conference crown after defeating Maine-Presque Isle and Wesleyan (Ga.) before facing Lynchburg for a second time in the NCAA Tournament.Â
