Davenport Tallies 14 Points in Clash with Greensboro

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Ta'Keria Legette emerged with a game-high 18 points, while teammates Quadijah Moore added 14 and Jalani Adams finished with 11, helping Greensboro earn an 88-56 win over Salem in USA South Conference basketball action at Varsity Gym on Thursday evening. Tyler Davenport led the way for the Spirits with 14 points, while Kyana Thomas capped off a solid performance with nine.

Salem (2-16, 1-11 USA South) finished the contest by hitting 22-of-70 (31.4%) from the floor and 10-of-14 (71.4%) at the free throw line against The Pride. Davenport, the lone Spirit in double-digit scoring, was 6-of-9 from the floor and 2-of-4 from the charity stripe. She also hauled in six rebounds in 23 minutes. Thomas provided a spark off the bench by knocking down 4-of-12 from the floor, including a 3-pointer.

Alize Munn led the Salem lineup with seven rebounds, pulling down five on the defensive glass, while making a pair of blocks. Sydney Bowen was also active on the glass with six boards.

The Pride (20-1, 13-1 USA South) closed out the game by converting 36-of-73 (49.3%) from the field, connecting on 10-of-28 (35.7%) from 3-point range, and 6-of-15 (40%) at the line. Legette led 11 players in scoring for Greensboro, while teammate Lauren Livingston dished out nine of the 25 assists for The Pride.

Greensboro streaked out to a 19-2 lead in the first 4:52 of the contest behind nine points from Legette. Thomas drove home a 3-pointer just over a minute, ending a six-minute scoring drought, to make for a 14-point affair. Lauren Privette and Davenport combined for the next three Salem points, resulting in 21-8 advantage for Greensboro to end the quarter. The Pride closed out the frame by hitting 9-of-16 (56.3%) from the floor and 3-of-8 from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Salem was successful on 3-of-17 from the field, converting a 3-pointer and a free throw along the way.

The Pride had their second 20-point quarter of the contest in the second frame, outscoring Salem 27-12. Salem reached double figures with a series of free throws by Echendu and added its first bucket with a layup by Davenport. Legette eventually extended the Greensboro lead to 35-16, following a 3-pointer, and would lead 48-20 heading into the intermission. The Greensboro offense maintained its hot hand, hitting 11-of-18 (61.1%) from the floor, converting four 3-pointers in the process. Salem managed 12 points in the second, finishing 4-of-4 at the charity stripe and was 4-of-12 from the floor.

Both units finished with 18 points in the second half with Davenport leading the way for the Salem offense with six. With Greensboro holding a 52-26 lead, Davenport and Dionne Sampson knocked down a pair of buckets make for a 22-point lead for The Pride. Greensboro put together a 9-3 run, extending the advantage to 61-33 with 3:48 left in the frame. Salem answered five points down the stretch to make for a 66-38 contest entering the fourth.

The Pride's offense remained hot in the fourth, hitting 9-of-18 from the floor and 2-of-6 from 3-point range, as Adams led the way with eight points. Meanwhile, Alize Brooks came through with six points for the Spirits, all by virtue of a 3-of-4 performance from the floor. Greensboro maintained at least a 30-point advantage throughout the frame.

Salem completes its three-game homestand on Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Spirits host Averett.
