FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Salem goalkeeper Mireya Sanchez tallied the second-most saves (19) in program history as the Spirits fell 3-0 in a USA South Conference match at Methodist on Saturday afternoon.

Sanchez reached her single-match career-high in saves, three shy of the program record, just three days after teammate Marissa Doutrich set the mark against Southern Virginia. Sanchez converted 11 in the opening half and followed with eight in the second.

The Spirits offense was led by Darilyn Nieto, who attempted five shots, including one shot on goal. Teammate Nathaly Berrezueta returned from an injury to attempted one shot, as did Layla Locklear and Giselle Ramos. Both Locklear and Ramos had one shot on goal for the Spirits apiece.

Methodist, the 2022 USA South Conference regular season and tournament champions, posted 39 shots (22 shots on goal) over the match. A total of 12 Monarchs had at least two shots in the contest, including Lola Campbell, who tallied a match-best six. Campbell had three shots on goal, one shy of a team-high, which belonged to Yaneli Sanchez.

Corrine Shovlain put the first goal on the board in the opening minute, driving home a pass from Sanchez. The two teamed up again four minutes later, in the fifth-minute, when Sanchez took a Shovlain goal to the back of the net for a 2-0 advantage.

Sanchez recorded her third, and the final goal of the match, in the 15th-minute, following a series of assists from Cameron Acevdeo and Maddie Hernandez.

Kaylea Carter picked up the win in net for the Monarchs, recording three saves.

Salem finished the day with four shots in both the first and second half, while Methodist attempted 22 in the opening half and 17 in the second.
