WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – First year pitcher Riley Dennis tossed a complete-game eight-hitter, fanning six Covenant hitters along the way, as Salem earned a split with the Scots on Saturday afternoon at Blixt Field. Salem earned the opening game win by a 4-3 margin, but Covenant took the second game of the doubleheader 18-6 (5 innings). 

Dennis was clicking on all cylinders in the first game, fanning six Scots sluggers and scattering eight hits in seven innings of work. She took advantage of extra-base hits from Kayla Dick (double) and Carmen Duffey (triple) along with a pair of two RBI performances from NeVaeha George and Jelene Avila to pick up her second win of the season and Salem's third team win. 

Sophomore Madison Long highlighted the second game for the Spirits, finishing 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI. Long led the way for a Salem offense that tallied eight hits, while the Scots countered with 18 hits and three multi-run innings to finish the series with a split.

SALEM HIGHLIGHTS
-Reese Upton connected on a triple to deep centerfield, resulting in the first hit of the game for the Spirits. 
-Riley Dennis silenced the Covenant bats by striking out three batters in the first two innings. 
-With one out in the second, Mackenzie Kramer moved to second on a series of Covenant errors. Three batters later, with Kramer at third, Jelene Avila reached on a single to right, allowing Kramer to trot home for the 1-0 Salem lead. 
-Kayla Dick sent a first-pitch double into centerfield to open the third inning, stretching the Spirits' lead to 2-0 two batters later on a single to right by Nevaeha George. 
-Riley helped her cause in the circle with one out and a runner on the first in the fourth by turning a double play with Carmen Duffey to keep the Scots scoreless. 
-Dick reached on a fielding error in the fifth, scoring two batters later on a single to shallow left field by George, giving Salem a 3-0 advantage. `
-With one out in the sixth, Duffey sent a triple to right field, giving Salem its first baserunner of the frame. Duffey provided the fourth Salem run of the game when Avila singled to left centerfield. 
-Riley faced 30 batters, issuing just one walk along the way, tossing 119 pitches. Her six K's mark her second-most in a single-game this season. She has had multiple K's in six games this season. 

COVENANT HIGHLIGHTS
-Helena Nagy delivered the first hit of the game for the Scots, roping a double into left centerfield, in the first inning. 
-The tallied all three runs in the seventh inning. Ashlyn Gaines opened with a single to short and Haley Russell followed with a double, putting two in scoring position. 
-Olivia Stefl brought in the first run with a single to left and Kathleen Carpenter followed with a single of her own that cut the Salem lead to 4-2. 
-The final Covenant run crossed the plate when Cassidi Phillips singled to right field, scoring Stefl. Salem got the final two outs of the frame to preserve the win.

SALEM HIGHLIGHTS
-Alli Stertzbach opened the third inning with a single to left and Madison Long followed with a double to left, scoring Stertzbach on the play for the first Salem run. 
-Long moved to third on a passed ball before scoring on a pass ball from third to account for the second Salem run. 
-Long again reached base on a double to centerfield in the fourth, scoring Emma Greeson from first, resulting in the 16-3 lead for Covenant. 
-Sarah Simpkins connected on her first collegiate hit in the fifth, keeping the inning alive with a two-out single. 
-Olivia Porter moved Simpkins into scoring position with a single to left field, putting two on the base pads for the Spirits. 
-Salem put three across in the home half of the fifth, including two which crossed the plate when Emma Greeson reached on a fielding error at second, which allowed Simpkins and Porter to score. 
-Stertzbach drew a walk, moving Greeson to second, before Long singled through the left side of the infield to score Kiersten Nelson for the final Salem run of the game. 

COVENANT HIGHLIGHTS
-The Scots capitalized on an error in the leadoff spot, occupied by Isabella Duran, who came home following a single by Isabella Duran, resulting in a 1-0 lead. Haley Russell also emerged with a hit in the first for Covenant. 
-Covenant scored six runs on four hits in the second inning, extending the lead to 7-0. 
-The Scots followed with an eight-run third, which came as a result of seven hits, breaking the game open as they assumed a 15-0 lead. Covenant sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning. 
-Covenant closed the game with 18 hits and 12 RBI.
-Six Scots sluggers had at least two hits in the game, including Isabella Duran (3-5, 4 runs, RBI, double) and Ashlyn Gaines (3-4, 3 RBI, 3 runs, 2 doubles). 
-Four Covenant sluggers had two hits in the game (Madison Taylor, Haley Russell, Kathleen Carpenter, Cailey Barnett).
-Charley Clark earned the winning after scattering eight hits over five innings, fanning six Salem hitters along the way.
