WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Salem first year
Riley Dennis fanned eight St. Andrews hitters, while
Carmen Duffey blasted a two-run home run and
Reese Upton delivered a two RBI double, to help the Spirits earn a split with a 6-2 victory in game one at Blixt Field on Thursday afternoon. The Knights bounced back to take game two by a 5-3 margin, completing the second-ever series between the two programs.
Dennis (1-1) struck out eight of the 27 batters she faced, while allowing just two runs on seven hits in the victory. Salem took advantage of three-run second, highlighted by the Duffey home run and a
Mackenzie Kramer double, to grab a 4-1 lead. The Spirits tacked on two runs in the sixth behind a double from Upton and a grounder by
Kayla Dick, to close out their first win of the season by a 6-2 margin.
St. Andrews' Meghan Fritz limited Salem's offense in the second game to five hits, while she struck out five Spirit hitters to give the Knights a 5-3 win. St. Andrews notched four runs in the third, taking advantage of a Spirits miscue, with Fritz helping out her own cause with a two RBI single to right. Salem scored two runs in the sixth, courtesy a double by
Olivia Porter, along with one in the seventh on an Upton sacrifice fly, but fell short in its rally.

Carmen Duffey followed that with a two-run home run on the first pitch to provide Salem with the 3-1 lead.

Reese Upton followed with a double to left, plating Tate, as Salem moved in front 5-2.

-The Knights scored the first run of the game when Valentina Jara reached on a walk and advanced to second on a steal before heading home on a double to left by Meghan Fritz.
-St. Andrews opened the third inning with three consecutive singles, loading the bases for Fritz, who reached on a fielder's choice that sliced the Salem lead to 4-2.

SALEM HIGHLIGHTS

Olivia Porter and
Reese Upton accounted for three of the five hits, with both players notching a double.

Isabella Morales tossed six innings, allowing eight hits and five runs (one earned run), while striking out two Knight hitters.
-Salem scored two runs in the sixth inning, starting with a leadoff walk of Upton.
Kayla Dick moved her teammate to second after being hit by a pitch and the pair moved to third on a
NeVaeha George single to left.
-With the bases loaded after the George single, a double by Porter plated both Upton and Dick in succession, resulting in a 5-2 contest.
-The final run of the game came in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Upton that scored Tate, who had reached base on a single to second.

ST. ANDREWS HIGHLIGHTS
-The Knights put four runs on the board in the top of the third. Cat Berger led off the inning with a single to left centerfield, moving to third on a single from Olivia Plybon. Valentina Jara reached on a fielder's choice that plated Berger for the first run.
-Meghan Fritz dropped a single into right field, extending the Knights' lead to 3-0 by plating both Plybon and Berger. The final run crossed the plate when Gabriella Pantoja hit a double to left field that brought home Fritz for the fourth run of the third.
-The Knights extended their lead to 5-0 in the game with a sixth inning blast over the left centerfield wall by Fritz.
