WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Salem tennis team put the finishing touches on a four-match week with back-to-back setbacks to USA South Conference rival N.C. Wesleyan (7-0) and non-conference opponent Piedmont (6-1).
Salem first-year
Cymone Crump was among the standouts for the Spirits, taking Bethan Fothergill (N.C. Wesleyan) to three sets (6-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-6)) before suffering a setback on Saturday afternoon. However, Crump responded by downing Piedmont's Caroline Morrison in three sets on Sunday by scores of 6-4, 5-7, 10-7. Crump and teammate
Adley Keim also claimed a doubles win in the clash with Piedmont, handing Jordan Ballard and Sarah Row a 6-4 loss in the battle of No. 1 seeds.

Cymone Crump emerged with two wins against the Lions, including a three-set triumph in No. 2 singles, where she downed Carolina Morrison by scores of 6-4, 5-7, 10-7. With the doubles point decided, Crump teamed with
Adley Keim to post a 6-4 win over the duo of Jordan Ballard and Sarah Row.
Piedmont claimed the first doubles win of the afternoon in No. 3 action as Alyssa McSpadden and Mackenzie Long posted a 6-0 win against
Emily Buckler and
Daisy Ortiz Mendoza. Teammates Bri Laidman and Hollan Rabensdorf brought the point home for the Lions, also with a 6-0 victory, which came in No. 2 doubles play versus
Samantha Smiley and
Abrielle Eckenroth.
The second point for the Lions came in singles, where fourth-seeded Sarah Sanabia earned a pair of 6-1, 6-1 wins against Smiley. Long picked up the third Piedmont point with a 6-1, 6-1 win over sixth-seeded Buckler.
Olivia Carpenter provided the match-clinching point in No. 3 singles after a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Mendoza. That margin moved to 5-0 after Row took down Eckenroth by margins of 6-1, 6-1 in No. 5 singles play. Keim suffered a 6-2, 6-1 setback for the Spirits in a battle with No. 1 McSpadden before Crump's win.

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - N.C. Wesleyan claimed its fourth straight win in the series after posting a 7-0 win on Saturday, April 12th.
The Battling Bishops' first win of the afternoon came as the No. 3 doubles pair of Ivanna Torres and Andrea Elaez Miranda emerged with a 6-0 victory. Teammates Melanie Guzman Gonzalez and Linda Nhiwatiwa clinched the doubles win, providing N.C. Wesleyan with a 1-0 lead in the match, with a 6-2 triumph over
Samantha Smiley and
Abrielle Eckenroth.
Renata Torres and Bethan Fothergill completed the doubles sweep of the Spirits, earning a 6-3 win over the tandem of
Adley Keim and
Cymone Crump in No. 1 action.
The second point of the match came in No. 5 singles, where Ajla Selimovic earned a 6-0, 6-0 win against Eckenroth. Gonzalez continued to keep N.C. Wesleyan rolling with a 6-1, 6-0 victory in No. 6 singles versus Smiley.
The Battling Bishops cinched the team point as Renata Torres closed out Koons in No. 4 singles with a two-set victory (6-1, 6-1). Miranda downed Keim in No. 1 singles by scores of 6-2, 6-0, resulting in a 5-0 lead.
Ivanna Torres' completed a 6-2, 6-0 win over Mendoza in No. 3 singles, providing the sixth point of the match. Meanwhile, Fothergill fought past Salem's
Cymone Crump in No. 2 singles play, to complete the 7-0 win for the Battling Bishop with wins of 6-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-6).
